Professional Fellowship in Ghana

What is this website I just clicked on?

I have been selected as Professional Fellow for Engineers without Borders (EWB) this coming fall.  I leave in August and come back in December.  I need to raise some money for the trip, which will support the local Ottawa chapter, my placement, EWB Canada, and the Mobile Business Clinic Venture that I’ll be working with.  As my friends and family, I could really use your support.  This isn’t just traditional donations though, for each amount of money you give, you will receive a Ghanaian treat in return (either while I’m away, or when I get back, depending on the item).

What is EWB all about?

Engineers without Borders is an organization committed to investing in people, creating innovative solutions, and working towards systemic change in Canada and Africa.  They have ventures in many different African countries that work with business, sanitation, and agriculture (as well as many other areas).  EWB has chapters of volunteers all over Canada, and works to promote advocacy on international issues and Canada’s aid program. You can check out their website here (http://www.ewb.ca/).  I have recently graduated from Carleton University, and have thus joined the Ottawa City Professional Chapter (http://ottawa.ewb.ca/).

My Specific Placement

Mobile Business Clinic (MBC) is one aspect of EWB’s Business Development Services (BDS) in Ghana (http://www.ewb.ca/ventures/business-development-services-bds).  MBS supports businesses by offering courses and mentorship programs to middle management.  The clinics are run in the Greater Accra Region (which is the capital of the country), and currently work with 10 businesses to increase their access to funding and networks.

Donation Levels (and Perks)

$10 - Blank Greeting Card from Ghana

Ghana is full of great artists, and a greeting card is a great small souvenir that you can keep, put on your wall, or give to a friend on a special day.  I will bring a card back for you in December (just in time for Christmas).  Let me know if you have any preferences (traditional, funky, certain colours, etc.) and I will try to account for them.

$15 - Home-Made Greeting Card

As some of you may know, I always make personal, custom cards for my friends and family on their birthdays and special holidays (like Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, etc.).  I want to share this skill with you, and offer to make a home-made card for one of your friends or family members.  Let me know which holiday, colour preferences, etc. and when you need it for (ideally December 2014 or later).  You can even send me a picture of that person, yourself, or the two of you together and I will include it in the card.  There will be room in the middle for you to customize it with your own message.

$20 (Limited Time Only) - A Ticket to my Bowling Fundraiser

The fundraiser will be held on Sunday, July 13 at 5pm at Walkley Bowling Lanes (2092 Walkley Road). The event will be a joint event with the Professional Fellow (Megan) from the Montreal Chapter, who will be going to Malawi in August.  The price of your entry includes a ticket for our door prizes, 2 games+tax, shoes, and pizza. There will be a 50/50 sale, drink specials during the event, and even the opportunity to choose the tunes for the evening ($1 per request made)! The cost of the ticket is $20 per person, and $15 for children under 12. Please include in the comment that the money is for the bowling fundraiser.  You can also check out the Facebook event here https://www.facebook.com/events/641700659247431/.  Please feel free to invite and SHARE this event with anyone you think would like to come, the more the merrier!

$20 - A Post-Card (with message about life in Africa)

Who doesn’t love getting mail?  I will buy a post-card in Ghana, and write a little story on the back about my day in Africa.  If you’re interested in knowing about something specific (food, people, music, etc.) let me know and I can try to include something about it. Don’t forget to send me your address!

$25 - Choose the topic for my blog post (related)

I am excited to blog about my experience in Ghana (http://amandacoxdesign.wordpress.com/).  However, if I’m blogging every week, I might not be telling you everything you want to hear.  Therefore, I’m open to discussing an original topic that could relate to Ghana, EWB, international development, my work… or any other topic you think might be related to my placement.

 $30 - A souvenir (with a picture and a story)

For this donation I will bring you back a small souvenir (such as a small bag, scarf, jewelry, decoration, etc.).  Let me know your preferences and I will try to make them possible.  You will receive the souvenir when I get back in December.

 $75 - 10 x Blank Greeting Cards from Ghana

Ghana is full of great artists, and a greeting card is a great small souvenir that you can keep, put on your wall, or give to a friend on a special day.  I will bring back 10 cards for you in December (just in time for Christmas).  Let me know if you have any preferences (traditional, funky, certain colours, etc.) and I will try to account for them.

$80 - A piece of art from Ghana

I will bring you back a small piece of art for your house or office.  Let me know if you would like something flat (a piece of canvas) or 3D (a small sculpture) and your preferences and I will try to find something to match your taste.

 $100 - 10 x Home-Made Greeting Cards

As some of you may know, I always make personal, custom cards for my friends and family on their birthdays, special holidays (like Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day, etc.).  I want to share this skill with you, and offer to make you 10 home-made cards for your friends or family members.  Let me know which holiday, colour preferences, etc. and when you need it for (ideally December 2014 or later).  You can even send me a picture of the person, yourself, or the two of you together and I will include one in each card.  There will be room in the middle of each card for you to customize it with your own message.  This is the perfect idea for Christmas Cards for your family, and they will add a nice personal, sentimental touch to the holidays.

$125 - Skype Call on Selected Ghanaian Topic

Perhaps you want to have me speak to your business or other group while I’m in Ghana via Skype (or come speak in person about Ghana when I return).  For this donation, you will receive a 1-hour talk about a mutually agreed upon topic related to my placement.  The topic could be about anything, such as what the food is like in Ghana, what it’s like to live in a rural community, how to invest in small businesses, or anything else you can think of.  Email me, and we can discuss options in more detail once I am in Ghana.

$150 - Learn Something New (Ghana Edition)

I am excited to learn many new things while I’m in Ghana.  Maybe you want to know something cool about Ghana too.  Perhaps there’s an artistic technique they use there or a sport you want to know more about.  Let me know where your interests lie and when I get to Ghana I will find someone to teach me all about it.  When I get back in December, I will try to teach you (and maybe show pictures, depending on what the skill is).  I can’t guarantee I’ll be great at it, but I’m sure it will be interesting for both of us! J

 $250 - A Real Ghanaian Dinner

Ghana has many local dishes that I’m excited to try while I’m there.  With your donation, I will learn a few recipes and try to re-create a meal full of delicious Ghanaian cuisine for you and your friends or family (4 to 6 people) when I return.

$500 - Put your logo on my blog posts

While I’m in Ghana I will be posting to my blog (http://amandacoxdesign.wordpress.com/) at least once a week for 4 months (August to December 2014).  With your donation, I will make sure to feature the logo of your company on all of my blog posts during my trip.
